Why Export Settings Matter
TikTok compresses every upload to keep its servers fast. That compression is unavoidable — but its severity depends entirely on your source file. If you upload a low-bitrate video, TikTok's re-encode makes it look worse. If you upload a clean, high-bitrate file, the result stays noticeably sharper even after re-encoding. In short: garbage in, garbage out — so the export step is where quality is won or lost.

If you filmed in 4K, export at 1080p rather than uploading the 4K file directly. A downscaled 4K source looks sharper after TikTok's compression than a native 4K upload, because the downscaling averages neighbouring pixels and gives the encoder more detail per pixel to work with.
Settings to Avoid
- Variable frame rates (VFR): TikTok expects constant frame rate; VFR files can cause playback stutter and audio drift.
- HEVC/H.265: Better compression, but more likely to be re-encoded aggressively and can cause compatibility issues on some devices.
- Extremely high bitrate (20+ Mbps): Wastes file size; TikTok's encoder won't preserve it anyway.
- Over-sharpening in the editor: Adding sharpness before export amplifies compression artefacts after upload. Sharpen lightly or not at all.
Downloading the Finished Video
